How much energy do you expend trying to find the perfect gift for someone you love? Do you enjoy the process or does it make you anxious?

View 505 Answers

Way too much time. I'm one of those people that gets more pleasure out of giving gifts than receiving them. So initially I get a lot of enjoyment out of looking for the perfect gift, but in my suit of perfection I end up getting frustrated and second guessing every purchase so that all of the joy is sucked out of the process.

It's not necessarily my favorite, but I use it all of the time. It's from the Southern classic, "Steel Magnolias."

Clairee says, " Well, you know what they say: if you don't have anything nice to say about anybody, come sit by me!"

I feel that way quite often.

Do you put up decorations for the holidays? If so, when do the decorations go up and when do you take them down?

I'm not a big holiday decorations person. I use my grandma's old stuff. If I put them up it's usually after Thanksgiving whenever I get motivated to get them out of the attic or as I randomly encounter them around the house. They definitely are taken down before NYE's eve, usually right after Christmas. There is one wind chime that I keep up year round. Maybe I'll take it down this year.

What band are you dying to see live in concert that you've never seen before? Would you travel to a different city or state just to see them?

There are lots of bands and artists that I'd like to see, but none I'm "dying to see." I'm lucky in that I've seen(and met) most of my favorites. Needless to say my history shows that if there was one I wouldn't have a problem roadtripping to see them.

September update
Winter
[info]bygeeves

I've been having a lazy day doing random odds and ends around the house, so I thought I'd update. Usually I'd spend at least part of the day running errands, but with the cost of gas I'm cutting trips to a minimum.  It's $4 or more a gallon, when you can find it. One gas executive suggested cancelling the GA/Alabama game to help even further shortages in the Athens area. I get what he's saying, but in Georgia the thought of canceling such a big game is blashemphy. I'll be wearing my black in solidarity with  the  blackout. Football has been so crazy. USC, Florida, and UT lost. Let's hope GA can pull through.

I've been trying to figure out Facebook, but I just don't get it. I'm missing something. People send me things and I don't know what they are(I went through a few of them today and accidentally deleted some.) The only time I really do anything with it is when I'm out and update my status from my phone. Someone please enlighten me to the awesomeness of Facebook.

I need new music, so I've been listening to a few new albums. My friend loves the Kings of Leon's new album, but I'm not feeling it. Same with the new Ben Folds. I was really optimistic about it, but I only semi-like one of the songs. My iTunes library crashed for the third time this year and in the process I lost all my ratings and comments. So in lieu of new music I'm rediscover old music. Currently it's Wilco and Will Hoge.

I'm also going to start scrapbooking. I've been "going to start scrapbooking", but this time is for real. I've been reading up on it, going through photos(I have so many prints to order), and accumulating supplies. Now I just need to do it.

As much as I love Summer I'm kind of glad to see it go. We enjoyed the last bit of the sun by hitting the North Georgia State Fair. It solidified my dislike of amusement park rides. I rode the adult equivalent of a kid ride and almost got sick. After the ferris wheel I was done with rides. It was my fault for not taking anything. Even if I didn't have motion sickness issues I don't think I would have liked it.  I was more excited about the treats. I was looking forward to trying deep fried twinkies and oreos, but unfortunately the only deep fried things were funnel cakes.  The highlight was definitely the petting zoo.

Off to watch the game.

August Update!
Winter
[info]bygeeves
So much for being better about updating. I was thinking I'd post something every couple of days, or at least once a week and here it is almost a month since my last entry. The problem is that when I feel like posting I'm not near a computer.

I hope all of you Floridians or people who were visiting Florida weren't hit too bad by Fay or Gustav. Atlanta had remnants of it and I was thinking of all of you.

Not much is new here. I'm in major Olympics withdrawal. I don't ever remember being this into an Olympics. China shouldn't have been awarded the Olympics based on their human rights policies and the overall actions of the government. However, they put on one heck of a show. London should just do some sort of melody with famous British musicians because it's going to be next to impossible to top the showmanship.

Outside of the ceremonies I bought into the hype hook, line, and sinker, and am now a huge Michael Phelps fan. Yes, he's probably a manwhore and doesn't seem like the brightest crayon in the box(although I think Ryan Lochte has him beat in that category.) I've sipped the Kool-Aid and I'm going to overlook the downsides and revel in his crazy athleticism and amazing body.  I'm not usually one to get all hot and bothered over muscles, but swimmers have the perfect physiques. Tall, lithe, and toned. I think the men's swim team probably had more than a little influence on my Olympic viewing habits.  Plus, the fashion in which they won. Beyond the swimming I loved all the background stories about the athletes. Two more years until Vancouver. I don't see get as excited about it though.

I was looking forward to the DNC, but not as much anymore. The Edwards affair and the choice of Biden have me a bit disillusioned. So I probably won't be watching most of the convention.

This weekend I have Mayer in Atlanta. I'm not as excited about it as I probably should be. I'm actually more excited to see DRH the night before, performing with John's band. I took my brother to see him at Eddie's Attic when he was in town during the holidays and since then he's been a fan, so he's going with me. It should be a good time to see him "live and electric."

Also, I've never been a big O.A.R. fan, but for some reason I can't get enough of their new single, Shattered. I guess that bodes well for the boat. Now I know/like three of their songs.

Facebook!

[info]bygeeves
I'm trying to re-emerge from my hiatus. Part of that will mean more frequent LJ updates(if I have anything worth journaling.) Another big part of that means jumping on the facebook bandwagon. Lindsay tried to get me to join forever ago, but since I never use myspace I figured it wasn't worth it. However, after a hard sell this weekend about how great it is I finally joined. I have no idea how it works.  I have nothing on my page, all I've done is go through the steps to create an account.  This weekend I'l try to at least add a picture or put something on my profile. In the meantime if any of you have accounts (which I'm sure you all do) add me.

Now off to get ready to see Boyz II Men and Morris Day and the Time at Chastain. I know you are all jealous.

Originally uploaded by bygeeves.
A month or so ago I saw a Coke display at Publix for a contest called "My Coke Fest." All it said was that you'd get VIP passes at a concert (artists TBA.) I entered and never thought about it again. A week ago I found out that My Coke Fest was part of the Final Four celebrations and that M5, LL Cool J, Sugarland, and others would be performing for free at Centennial Olympic Park. I figured I would go, but didn't really feel like dealing with the rain & crowds enough to be down front.

Friday I get home to find a Fed Ex package on the front door saying I was a grand prize winner. I hardly(if ever) win stuff like this. I've been able to talk/maneuver my way into things, but I usually don't out right win. My mom entered too and has a thing for LL and M5, so I too her with me.

The package only said I won and gave me a map and two wristbands, with no info on where to go. We wandered around backstage only to find out our passes were for crappy tent outside that only had free sodas/water. We were able to score better bands that let us stay backstage with the Coke Execs. There was free food and an open bar. The best part was that it provided us access to an area in front of the stage. So I was able to get drinks, come and go as I please and still be first row.

LL Cool J was the first act we caught. Love him. He was asking for people to come up on stage and my mom was one of the first people up. I should be embarrassed, but by the end of his set I wanted to get up there. Other highlights...he threw a bunch of ones out into the crowd, but they didn't make it very far so the security guard collected them and gave them to me(it more than covered my parking!) A low light were all the drunken kids of the Coke kids dancing onstage like they were on Spring Break.

At the end of LL Cool J's set my mom called me backstage. Ryan Seacrest was in the tent. He's a nice guy. He's also a GA native and a UGA Alum. We're the same height(I might even be taller.)

Sugarland was next. They're a country act from area. They're best known for their song w/ Bon Jovi, "Who Says You Can't Go Home."

M5 closed the night. It's been over two years I've seen them. I'm still a fan, but not quite to the same extent. They played a couple of the new songs that I haven't heard. One was meh, the other was good. They didn't play the new single. They were backstage afterwards, but I didn't feel the need to wait.

All in all it was a great evening. Yay to Coke (even though Pepsi tastes better) and Publix for helping provide a great experience.

an update of sorts
Winter
[info]bygeeves

So much is going on with everyone including...
engagements(congrats Becca!), marriages(congrats Sarah), pregnancies, birthdays, new abodes, beaus, and jobs. I plan on getting around to catching up on posts and commenting, but in the meantime congratulations, mazel tov, job well done, and good luck.

None of the aforementioned things have happened to me, but things good. My grandma and brother are both doing a lot better. Both have healed amazingly.

I had the chance to roadtrip/hangout on two sepearte occasions with Allison...
Huntsville (02.05.06) & Knoxville (02.06.06)
- We met up in Huntsville to see Mayer. Had the chance to chat with Daniella, Sarah, Barbara, and Karmen.
- Spent the night in Chattanooga @ the Sheraton and headed to Knoxville in the morning.
- Hung out in Knoxville for the day (ate yummy Mexican and had lots of girl talk.)

Columbus & Lexington(02.23.07-02.25-07)
- My first time visiting KY & OH. Met in Frankfort and drove up to Columbus.
- Arrived in time to catch Mayer (the show was meh.) Stayed at a Doubletree Suites(mmm cookies.) Went shopping at the tiniest H&M(I wish we had one in Atlanta).
-  Drove back to Lexington. Ate ice cream at Graeter's.  Met up for Sarah's bridal shower. Hung out and headed to Mayer in Rupp Arena. Discovered that Mayer shows are a lot more fun after a few drinks. Tasted beer cheese (and discovered I'm not a fan), ate Taco Bell(I remember why it's been years since I ate there), & crashed at Allison's.
- Brunched and reluctantly said goodbye to everyone.

Allison came to the realization that neither one of us is really the person that initiates picture taking. We tried to be better about that, but it didn't really work out.
Here's a link to my flickr page with a few pictures from the trips.

Besides the run of Mayer shows with Allison, I've been pretty boring on the concert front.  I saw Lily Allen Monday night.  I love her. She's my not so guilty pleasure. Maroon 5 has a free(key word) show coming up and of course I'm going to see Jay, but that's about it. A bunch of my favorites have albums coming out and will probably tour (cough:ryanadams:cough) or do Bonnaroo(which I'd like to experience once.)

Spring is here(today's officially the first day!) That means Summer is not far behind. I love this time of year. I can't wait to swap out my winter clothes for my warm weather ones.

The change in weather has given me a kick in the butt and I've started South Beach(anniewisc's 3.5 lb loss in two days convinced me.) I've lost all the weight I gained the last couple of months and made it through most of Phase One(I didn't even cheat that much.) The real test will be whether I can remain dedicated for the long term.

I know there is something I'm forgetting to mention, but I intend to be better about updating in the future. Three months is entirely too long.

December Update
Winter
[info]bygeeves
I just realized that the month is almost over and I haven't updated.  Nothing much is new here. So in lieu of a real entry here's a cliff notes review of this month...
- my grandma's home and her health is a lot better. the bulk of my free time is spent with her.
- i visited athens! i saw parts of the town i'd never seen, ate at the globe(their food menu is as good as their drinks), gave my friend a mini-tour of his new hometown,  & attended a scenester(very nice people, just not my scene. pun intended) birthday party/concert at a compound/venue/house. unfortunately lindsay and whitney were already home for the holidays, so i didn't get to see them.
- despite being really diligent about taking vitamins and washing my hands, i've caught a horrible cold. as a result, i have a bunch of things i need to do (holiday stuff, exercise) that i'm not up to actually doing.
- butch walker did a secret benefit show at a small club. a bunch of his friends in atlanta area bands opened(most them sucked) and he headlined. he was in good spirits and the show was excellent as usual.  there was even a marvelous 3 reunion (his old band.) i <3 him.
- speaking of last minute holiday shows, it's been a year since mayer performed at eddie's. if i had to sit down and come up with my dream concert experience, it wouldn't be much different. the combination of music, friends, and atmosphere made for a great vibe and a memorable couple of nights.

- even though i'd probably skip it this year, i'm a bit bummed that i don't have DS or the excuse of any holiday shows to roadtrip and see you guys. maybe in the new year.

in the meantime i hope the holidays are as stressless as possible and that you are actually able to enjoy yourselves.

october 2006 update part II
Winter
[info]bygeeves

I already spoke about Mayer Night One, well here is a quick recap for the rest of October and here are the pictures.

10.14.06 Mayer @ Chastain Night Two
- I wasn't able to score decent tickets so one of my best friends hooked me up with a table for night two.  I had the pleasure of sitting with Jenn, Allison, and Ms. T & Crew.
- DRH opened and was awesome.
- Mayer's set was 13432432 x better than the first night. No St. Patrick's Day(he better play it at every show I attend on the winter tour), but there was an awesome RFS Medley.
- Overall it was a better so. Even though I was farther back I had such a good time.

Las Vegas
- my best friend had a work conference at Caesar's and she invited me to tag along. We had an awesome room.
- Day One: We toured the Forum Shops. We ate at Joe's Stone Crab. We went to Madame Tussaud's(I had entirely too much fun.) We ate our first In n' Out Burgers. We slept.

- Day Two: We walked the Strip. We shopped. I drank Boba Tea(yummy.) We went to the Star Trek Experience(I didn't get sick.) We ate a buffet. We gambled. We went to the Pussycat Doll Lounge(we missed Britney by one night.)We drank. We gambled some more.

- Day Three: We gambled. We drank. We did a Grand Canyon tour. We walked around some casinos and gambled some more.

- Day Four: We ate another buffet. We gambled some more. We hit the outlets. We ate another In n' Out Burger. We left.

To sum up we gambled(nickel slots all the way), ate, and window shopped.
I'm going to give it another go, but I don't think I'm a Vegas person. I'm too frugal. As much as I love to shop and gamble, you can easily waste so much money doing both of those things in Vegas. I've also been spoiled by the smoking bans here. It seemed like everyone was smoking everywhere we went.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I have a lot to be thankful for this year (my grandma and brother being at the top of the list.) Among that list of things I'm thankful for is the music and fortuitous coincidences that have brought most of(if not all of) you into my life.

I hope all of you have a good and peaceful day full of family, friends, and yummy food!

I'm off to the hospital to hang with my grandma and peruse the paper(including the Black Friday sales, which I can't afford.)
